Apply for jobs

Applying for jobs can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Applying for jobs can feel daunting, whether you’re just starting out, returning to work, or ready for a new direction. We understand that everyone faces different challenges when looking for their next role. That’s why our friendly Advisers work with you one-to-one, helping you explore opportunities, identify roles that suit your strengths, and support you through every step of the application process.

Finding the right job

Before you begin writing a CV or application, it helps to find a job that matches your skills and interests.

Taking time to understand what the role involves, and what the employer is looking for, means you can write an application that feels more focused and tailored.

We can help you

  • Search job websites like MyJobScotland, and S1Jobs
  • Set up job alerts so you’re the first to hear about new opportunities
  • Understand what job descriptions are really asking for
  • Match your skills, experience, or interests to what employers are looking for

Writing your CV

A strong CV gives you the best chance of getting noticed, but to stand out, it needs to be tailored to the job you’re applying for.

We’ll help you shape a CV that highlights your strengths and speaks directly to the kind of role you want, using clues from the job description, like teamwork, problem solving or time management, to show employers what you can offer.

Your CV should:

  • Highlight your skills and experience most relevant to the role
  • Use language that reflects the job description/ person specification
  • Be honest, easy to read, and well organised

No matter your background, we’ll help you:

  • Recognise everyday skills, like caring for others, volunteering, or running a household, that can transfer into the workplace.
  • Include training or courses that show you’re motivated and ready to learn

If you’d like to build your CV further, take a look at Get Experience for paid placements and volunteering opportunities, or explore Learn New Skills for free courses designed to help you grow in confidence and prepare for your next role.

Writing a cover letter or email

A cover letter, or sometimes just a short email, is your chance to introduce yourself and explain why you’re the right fit for the role.

It should briefly show:

  • Why you’re interested in the job and the company
  • What makes you a good match
  • What you can bring to the organisation

We’ll help you:

  • Write in a way that sounds confident and professional, without feeling too formal
  • Keep your message short, relevant, and easy to read
  • Highlight your strengths without repeating your CV

Completing application forms

Many employers now use online application forms instead of CVs. These usually ask you to explain how you meet the person specification, the skills, experience, and qualities listed in the job advert.

We’ll help you:

  • Understand what the employer is really looking for
  • Show clearly how you meet the essential criteria
  • Use examples from your life, not just from past jobs
  • Structure your answers in a clear and confident way (using techniques like STAR)
